According to HP canon, people are only able to see Thestrals if they have seen someone die. My question to Rowling is this: If Lily Potter was murdered by Voldemort right in front of Harry, why was he not able to see the thestrals that pulled the carriages from Hogsmeade Station to Hogwarts until his fifth year after having seen Cedric die?

I'm up for any suggestions or theories, so long as they make sense.

I have thought of the possibility that since Harry was a baby and doesn't technically remember the events, that it may have something to do with it. However, when confronted by a dementor, Harry relives that particular night and its events, so I for one call this an unlikely reason. Anyone got others?

Harry did see the death, but he was so young that he didn't really understand what happened and never accepted her death. Thestrals are only seen by someone who has seen and accepted a death.

This is late, buuuuuut...

"Harry did not see his parents die. He was one year old and in a cot at the time. Although you never see that scene, I wrote it and then cut it. He didn’t see it; he was too young to appreciate it."
